Treatment Approach
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Dr. Anna Swan is a Board Certified Clinical Psychologist (CA #PSY31086, NY #022808-1) who cares for children, teens, young adults, parents, and families with anxiety and related concerns. Dr. Swan specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), an evidence-based treatment which helps clients learn skills to cope with anxiety, and put those skills into practice by gradually engaging in, rather than avoiding, anxiety-provoking situations. Dr. Swan offers CBT in-person in San Francisco, CA, and via telehealth when appropriate. She is licensed to provide care in California and New York.
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy
Dr. Swan also works with families with young children (ages 3 to 6) exhibiting behavioral difficulties, anxiety, and selective mutism. She is certified in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) as a therapist and within-agency trainer through PCIT international. PCIT is an evidence-based, short-term therapy program designed to further improve the parent-child relationship, help parents set limits in a calm and effective way, and help children regulate and listen when needed. When young children are experiencing anxiety symptoms, PCIT can help families learn tools to cope with anxiety, and ways to gradually approach, rather than avoid, situations when nervous. Dr. Swan only offers PCIT virtually.

Education, Training, & Experience
Dr. Swan completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology at Yale University. She earned her MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, where she was mentored by Dr. Philip Kendall, the developer of the most widely studied and disseminated child anxiety treatment. She has specialized training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Exposure and Response Prevention, Dialectical Behavior Therapy for teens, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy and other evidence-based practices.
Dr. Swan has held two faculty appointments. As a clinical assistant professor at the NYU Child Study Center, Dr. Swan provided direct clinical services for children, teens, and young adults experiencing elevated anxiety and mood concerns, as well as clinical supervision and training. Dr. Swan then joined the faculty at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) as a clinical assistant professor. There she provided specialty clinical care for children, teens, and families with anxiety, mood, and behavioral concerns, and provided training and clinical supervision for psychology and psychiatry learners in areas of expertise (CBT and PCIT). She continues to work with UCSF psychology and psychiatry learners as volunteer clinical faculty.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT is an evidence-based treatment for youth (ages 7+) and adults that focuses on the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. CBT is skills-based, and can be delivered individually or with caregivers/family depending on developmental age and treatment goals. In-person services are available in San Francisco. When appropriate, virtual services are available in California and New York.
Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). PCIT is an evidence-based treatment for families with young children (ages 3 to 6) exhibiting behavioral and emotional concerns. Currently, only virtual services are available. In PCIT, caregivers learn specialized skills centered on nurturing their relationship with their child, and creating structure/setting limits in a calm and consistent way. During session, caregivers receive real-time coaching through bluetooth headphones connected to their computer/tablet/device as they interact with their child.

Do you offer in-person and/or telehealth appointments?
Yes, I provide in-person appointments at my office location: 399 Laurel Street, Suite 3, San Francisco, CA. I also offer telehealth appointments. I am licensed to provide care in California, and New York (CA #PSY31086, NY #022808-1).
Do you accept insurance?
I do not accept insurance as payment, but I can provide you with a monthly 'superbill' that you may submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. Please contact your insurance for information about your out-of-network provider reimbursement policy. My rate is $375 for each 45 to 50 minute session.
What is your cancellation policy?
Clients are responsible for the full fee in the event of a missed or cancelled appointment with less than 48 hours notice. Please be aware that insurance companies do not reimburse for cancelled or missed sessions, and it is your responsibility to pay the fee in full.
I’m interested in connecting. What are the next steps?
Step 1. Phone Consultation. Please contact me by email (hello@swanpsychology.com), phone at (415) 475-9516, or schedule directly on my calendar to set up a brief 10 to 15 minute phone consultation to discuss what you're looking for and if I may be a good fit.
Step 2. Prior to your first session. I will send you an intake questionnaire and consent forms via our secure online system before your first session. I recommend completing these online before your first visit so that I can review them in advance. You may also complete these forms during your first session.
Step 3. Intake Assessment. Before beginning therapy, we will meet for an intake session or sessions. Typically, I meet with caregivers for one session, and youth for another. The intake can be completed as one extended two-hour session; or across two one-hour sessions. This allows me to learn more about strengths, current concerns, and what you have already tried. At the end of the intake, I will share recommendations and collaborate on treatment goals. If my areas of expertise do not match with your treatment goals, I will provide referrals for other providers who may be a better fit.
Step 4. Ongoing therapy. Typically, ongoing 45-minute therapy appointments are scheduled weekly. More frequent or longer sessions can be arranged if needed. At your request, I am able to collaborate with other providers, like teachers, primary care, and psychiatrists to coordinate care.
To learn more about me or my services, you can reach me by phone, email, or schedule directly on my calendar for a brief 10 to 15 minute phone-call.
Of note, I will be working virtually / out of office until Aug 20, 2025, and not scheduling calls during this time.
